Professor Bill Roscoe FREng
Professor Roscoe is a world renowned expert in cybersecurity and verification.
He read Mathematics at University College, University of Oxford 1975-8, achieving the top First degree in his year.
He continued his research at Oxford and then took over as Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford in 2003. Under his leadership over the following 11 years, the department tripled in size and rose to be ranked third in the world after MIT and Stanford.
While Head of Department he brought about the creation of Cyber Security Oxford, an inter-disciplinary co-operation that supports innovative research in the computer security field by encouraging collaboration between R&D, the private sector and the Government. He currently leads the Security Research Theme in his department.
Professor Roscoe’s passion for cybersecurity theory is matched by a desire to see his research make an impact by solving practical challenges, and he has been involved with many private and governmental agencies, such as the US Office of Naval Research, QinetiQ and inmos. His collaboration with inmos led to a Queen’s Award.
He holds numerous patents and patent applications in computer security and verification.
